Located between the Grand Place and the Brussels Canal, five constructivist style social housing blocks are a home to up to 800 inhabitants. 800 lives about to be uprooted. At the end of 2023, the five blocks will be torn down and replaced with new housing for a new kind of wealthier inhabitants. Down by the third block, the social cohesion for housing and renovation project (pcs in French) welcomes those who stay, those who leave and the ones that are already gone. They can have a chat there, talk about their daily life, their departure from the neighborhood but also discuss the neighbors, the years of cohabitation, the confirmed prejudices like dealing, violence, poverty and insalubrity, and most of all, the love they share for the neighborhood and how hard it has been to leave it, despite the poor conditions and the insecurity. But some have felt relief being able to move somewhere else. At the end of 2023, all inhabitants will be gone, and with them, the last physical remains of a place that houses their memories.

Situé entre la Grand Place et le canal de Bruxelles, cinq blocs de logements sociaux, à l’air constructiviste, hébergent jusqu’à 800 habitants. 800 vies qui vont être déracinées. Fin 2023, les cinq blocs seront démolis au profit de nouveaux logements et d’un nouveau profil d’habitant. Au pied du troisième bloc, se trouve le projet de cohésion sociale d’habitat et de rénovation (pcs), où parfois, ceux qui restent, ceux qui partent et ceux qui sont partis s’y retrouvent pour discuter. Iels racontent leur quotidien, leur départ du quartier mais aussi les voisins, voisines et les années de cohabitation, les aprioris confirmés comme le deal, la violence, la précarité et l’insalubrité. Puis surtout l’amour du quartier. Avec quelles difficultés, iels ont eu à le quitter malgré son insalubrité et son insécurité. Et d’autres, leur soulagement d’être parti.es vivre ailleurs. Fin 2023, toustes les habitant.es seront parti.es, et avec elleux, les dernières traces physiques d’un lieu qui héberge leurs souvenirs.

The Five Blocks housing estate was built in 1960 and can accommodate 850 people.

On the fourth floor of the orange block, through a half-open door, the whisper of a prayer escapes.

Young people are angry about the destruction of their housing estate. Although it is a "shithole", as they call it, they spend their days there hanging out and smoking together.

Les jeunes sont en colère contre la destruction de leur lotissement. Bien que ce soit un "trou à rat", comme ils l'appellent, ils y passent leurs journées à traîner et à fumer ensemble.

The Five blocks are in the heart of Brussels, surrounded by uptown areas where lives a majority of wealthy flemish.

Les Cinq blocs se trouvent au cœur de Bruxelles, entourés de quartiers chics où vit une majorité de Flamands aisés.

The Orange Tower was not originally part of the first phase of demolition. It was added to save time and money.

La Tour Orange ne faisait pas partie de la première phase de démolition. Elle a été ajoutée pour gagner du temps et de l'argent.

The PCS, the social cohesion, housing and renovation project, welcomes the residents every day of the week. They organise various activities to bring the residents together and create a happy atmosphere.

Le PCS, le projet de cohésion sociale, de logement et de rénovation, accueille les résidents tous les jours de la semaine. Ils organisent diverses activités pour rassembler les résidents et créer une atmosphère joyeuse.

"It's ugly and smelly here. In winter it's too cold and in summer too hot. We don't have double glazing. You can hear your neighbours shouting at each other. The lift often breaks down. Sometimes we have to go up eight floors with the groceries. It's a shit hole."

"C'est moche et ça sent mauvais ici. En hiver, il fait trop froid et en été trop chaud. Nous n'avons pas de double vitrage. On entend les voisins s'engueuler. L'ascenseur tombe souvent en panne. Parfois, nous devons monter huit étages avec les courses. C'est un trou à rats."
